I had the opportunity to speak at a networking event in Montreal where I presented 3 ways to maximize your social media efforts. The recorded clip is below.
Who is using social media or wants to use social media to grow their business?
As business owners, we already wear many hats. So when we spend time on social media, we want it to work! Here are 3 ways to maximize your social media efforts so you know you’re getting the best return.
Shift #1: Know the Difference Between Strategy and Tactics
Mixing them up will make you think your social media doesn't work. We don’t want that.
Tactics are quick fixes. Things like using new hashtags, changing your sign-off, or tweaking your content based on feedback. You can make these changes fast—sometimes in minutes.
Strategy is your long-term plan, your vision. It's the big picture—how you position your brand, your content topics and how you decide what platforms to use.
Social media will feel ineffective if you mix these up.
You will maximize your social media efforts by sticking to one strategy while staying flexible with tactics.
Shift #2: Know that you can Repurpose Your Content
You don’t need to create new content all the time. Taylor Swift recorded her Eras Tour and released it in movie theaters. She repurposed her concert into a movie. If Taylor can do it then the rest of us can do it. There are 4 reasons repurposing content will maximize your social media efforts.
It saves time—you’re not starting from scratch every time.
Putting out the same message strengthens your brand.
You’ll refine your message—you’ll see what works and improve it. You want to put your content out there to see what works and what needs to be improved. What resonates with your audience and what doesn’t
Reach a wider audience—not everyone sees your post the first time so it will expand your reach.
That will maximize your social media efforts. Don’t reinvent the wheel.
Shift #3: Know Your Audience Needs
Don’t just post to post. Think about your audience first.
Here’s a quick story: I worked with a web developer who wanted to post something technical. I asked, “Will this help your clients?” He realized it was just content he wanted to make, not content his audience needed. That shift in focus made a big difference in his content creation.
If your content doesn’t support your audience, your social media will not work.
Maximize your social media efforts by getting to know your audience better.
The best way to do that is to talk to them.
By applying these 3 simple shifts—knowing the difference between strategy and tactics, repurposing, and focusing on your audience needs—you will maximize your social media efforts.
